Occupy Blogoshpere 27

Last Thursday, Amy, author of Souldipper decided to ‘Occupy Art’, inviting comment on a well known painting. Joss, at Be W.E.L.L. continued the theme ~ but I had already written my ‘Occupy’ post, about my birthday. (Old news, I know, move on!)

Here is one of my all-time favourite paintings (apart from The Artist’s work, of course ~ but we showcase that each week, on Tao of Scrumble)

The Light Of The World by William Holman Hunt

20120802-103005.jpg

Inspired by Biblical references, ‘The Light of the World’ portrays the story of Christ, in symbolic language: the lamp; two crowns of thorns, (one of which is budding); fallen fruit; the sadness on His countenance…..Interpretation and further information can be found on~line.

I’m not sure why this painting touches me so deeply ~ although I do have spiritual faith, I don’t follow a religion. But I’ve loved it ever since I studied art at school.

What stirs me most is the closed door, on which The Saviour knocks. Overgrown with weeds and bearing rusted hinges, it has clearly been neglected for some time. There is no handle, so like the heart it represents, it can only be opened from within.

In the run up to the Olympic Games ~ which start in London next week, the Olympic Torch has been making it’s way around Britain. Last Saturday it came to The Isle of Wight.

I’m not sporty, or zealously patriotic and am ambivalent about the nation hosting this ridiculously expensive event, in these stringent times. But when we learned that the Torch Relay was scheduled to pass the end of our road, we simply had to go out and cheer on the bearers ~ what are the chances of that happening again, in our lifetimes?

Even though it was windy and drizzling, there was a carnival atmosphere. We waited….and waited… and eventually the parade began with police motorbikes, lights flashing and sirens blaring ~ followed by a handful of sponsorship floats and a slightly bemused window cleaner, (his white van boxed in by the convoy!) Then a wave of cheers, from further down the road, announced that the main attraction was finally on it’s way.

The torch-bearer for this leg of the relay was a disabled teenager in an electric wheelchair. She held the flame aloft, excited and proud to be taking part in this ancient tradition. Her smiling face radiated pure joy, bringing a tear to my eye. Bless her!

I thought some technical glitch had wiped the video footage from my phone, so I was delighted this morning when I found it. As I relived the unexpected emotion of those fleeting seconds, I was so glad I’d made the effort to walk the few yards from my door to the kerbside. (Did I mention that I’m not very sporty?) I will always remember this unique occasion and the effect it had on me.

Apologies for the quality of this image ~ it’s a blurry still from the lost and found video. But it clearly shows the Olympic Flame, which I’m now handing on ~ to light up the Blogosphere! 🙂

At the end of this month I’ll turn sixty and I’m surprised to find it more significant than I thought.

On one hand I’m excited to be this age, living in such interesting times. But on the other, I have to accept that, unless I live to a hundred and twenty, there’s more behind me than ahead. This sobering thought ~ along with the changeable weather (it’s pouring again……surprise!), and another week at work, until the summer holiday ~ Left me feeling a little jaded this morning, with nothing positive to report.

Then The Artist returned from his morning job and put everything into perspective. (He is rather good at that.)

As a Personal Assistant with Age UK, Martin visits the elderly, doing anything they ask, apart from dog~walking and gardening (his choice.) But he’s happy to do chores and run errands; fill out paperwork, play Scrabble ~ or anything else to help them live in their own homes for longer.

But it’s far from a one way exchange. Apart from the wages and his obvious job satisfaction, his assignments have shown him that we should all do whatever we enjoy doing, while we still can.

Some clients are in their eighties ~ two are ninety~five; independent and mentally agile but requiring a little help with the things they can’t manage. To them he’s ‘just a nipper’ ~ relatively speaking, a young man. (He is to me, too, since I am older by a year and a bit.)

‘If we live as long as they have,’ he said, when I moaned about my age and the weather, ‘we’ve got a good thirty years in front of us. Now cheer up!’

And I have. 🙂

P.S. It’s still raining.

We’ve had stormy weather of late, in the UK ~ relentless rain washing out The Queen’s Jubilee and The Isle of Wight Music Festival. In the end, it became ridiculous, so we decided to go with it and enjoy the wind and the wet, marvelling at their power.

Then yesterday it started to settle and the sun came out just as Martin and I were making our way to work ~ typical!

This evening we’re basking in glorious sunshine, reading and writing in our garden. It’s an unexpected bonus, one which I intend to exploit fully. But I can’t allow Thursday to pass without mentioning ‘Occupy Blogosphere,’ so here is my contribution for today:
